The Patch and a bit of the Channel, 1968

  1. This pic is so cool seeing the surfers in the water knee paddling, and with no wetsuits on. Those were the days at the Bo'! And I remember it all to well, especially on those cold winter days, freezing, but the desire to surf was more powerful.

  2. In those days you could have a big fire right there on Brighton Beach... I learned to surf that year. I was 8 years old... My first wave was sitting at the front of Kirby's longboard... Then Dave B. gave me a shortboard that he had just shaped (very poorly, which is why he gave it to me, but good enough for me).

  3. Here's a question for you: do you remember the Barca Brothers? They were the ever so territorial Brothers that ruled the waves at Bolinas in the 60's. And rumor has it that Dustin Barca, the world ranked surfer from Hawaii, is possibly related to one of them.

  4. I sure do, and I know them well (though I haven't seen them in 20+ years). It was Dave to whom I referred above. Dave and Tom (and Jill and Lynn) moved to Maui in 1970. I moved there in '76, and was close with all of them for ~8 years while I lived there (on & off). We used to surf the dawn patrol at Honolua, and anywhere else that was breaking. Maui in those days was pretty sweet...

Dustin is Dave's son from his second marriage, and grew up on Kauai with his mom. Nowadays, Dave is in his third marriage.

Back in the day, we all worked at the fancy restaurants. Tom also used to have a Hobie Cat rental concession on Ka'anapali Beach, but I'm not sure what he does these days. Dave sells real estate now. I hope their lives are prosperous and healthy and good...
